If you’re intimidated by the time and skill it takes to grill ribs, cook them low and slow in the oven. Baked pork or beef spare ribs with your favorite dry rub and then bake them for several hours at very low heat.
Once the meat is tender and almost falling off the bone, you can brush the ribs with barbecue sauce and stick them under the broiler for a few minutes to give them a rich brown color.
Ribs are an American classic. Make your own today. Below are the instructions for both dry and wet ribs, made in the oven or on the barbecue.
INGREDIENTS:
Oven Baked Pork Ribs
2 to 2 1/2 lbs Pork baby back ribs
1 1/2 to 2 tbls Liquid Smoke (I used hickory liquid smoke)
Dry Rub (store brand works or the recipe for mine is below)
1/3 cup of BBQ Sauce (my recipe is below)
DRY RUB RECIPE
2 tbls paprika
1 tbls lemon pepper
1 tbls garlic powder
1 tbls onion powder
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tbls brown sugar
1 1/2 tsp kosher salt
HOMEMADE BARBECUE SAUCE RECIPE
1/4 cup ketchup
1 tsp spicy brown mustard
1 tbls honey (or brown sugar)
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 to 2 tsp dry rub seasoning
Pull the membrane off of the ribs. Ribs come with a whitish membrane, usually located on the underside of the cage, that can get hard and chewy if you leave it on. It’s easy to pull off, just place your fingers underneath and tug it off. Use a knife if you need help getting it loose.
Decide how to season your ribs. You can start with a simple seasoning of salt and pepper and add the sauce later, or use a dry spice mix that you rub over the ribs to season them overnight before cooking. Either method produces delicious, flavorful ribs, so it’s completely up to you.
