Episode Summary

Pressure Test: Liam Downes’ Smoked Egg Yolk Raviolo, Truffle & Asparagus – Alex, Gillian, Lourdes and Nat traveled to Black Cat Truffles Farm in Wattle Flat. They were given four hours to re-create chef Liam Downes’ smoked egg yolk raviolo with truffle and asparagus. Alex injured herself twice while making her pasta dough, forcing her to restart the process, but she recovered and produced a near-perfect dish. Nat performed well throughout the challenge and while she forgot the crispy chicken skin, the rest of her dish more than made up for it, and she was also safe from elimination. While Lourdes’ pasta and asparagus purée were lovely and all of her elements were plated, her chicken jus was over-reduced, and the texture of it was firm and grainy which affected the balance of the dish. Gillian had trouble with the pasta, which set her behind, and as a result, she left the asparagus, chicken skin and truffles off the plate. Although Lourdes’ and Gillian’s dishes had flaws, there was one marked difference between their plates and that was the oozy egg yolk. Because the egg yolk was the foundation of Liam’s dish, the judges felt that Lourdes had missed the brief, and she was eliminated.

MasterChef Australia Show Summary

MasterChef Australia has a different format from that of the original British MasterChef and MasterChef Goes Large formats. Initial rounds consist of a large number of hopeful contestants from across Australia individually “auditioning” by presenting a food dish before the three judges in order to gain one of 50 semi-final places. Entrants must be over 18 years old and their main source of income cannot come from preparing and cooking fresh food in a professional environment.

The semi-finalists then compete in several challenges that test their food knowledge and preparation skills. In Season 1, the top 50 competed until 20 were left, with the final 20 progressing to the main stage of the show. From Season 2 onwards, 24 contestants progress. The contestants will then be whittled down through a number of individual and team-based cooking challenges and weekly elimination rounds until a winning MasterChef is crowned. The winner plays for a prize that includes chef training from leading professional chefs, the chance to have their own cookbook published, and A$250,000 in cash.
